5 Best Activities for Seniors in the Fall

For many, fall is their favorite season.

And it’s easy to see why from the mountains bursting with beautiful colors of the sunset, the sound of leaves crunching under their feet, and the sweet smell of baked goods and spices that permeate the kitchen, it’s hard to not fall in love with fall. But for many, the cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours make it difficult to enjoy all their favorite activities. At Aegis, we care about our patients and their well-being. To help promote happiness this beautiful fall season, try some of the following activities to get in the spirit and all the joy it brings:

1. PLAY IN THE KITCHEN
Baking is the perfect indoor activity that stimulates the brain, enhances the mood, and tickles your taste buds. With many gardens in full harvest mode, it’s a great time to utilize your pumpkin, squash, and apples in the kitchen. For added fun and to boost sociality, involve your grandchildren or friends. Try these simple and mouthwatering fall recipes:
  • Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Zucchini Bread
  • Apple Fritter Bread
  • Pumpkin Spice Muffins
  • Snickerdoodles
  • Chocolate Zucchini Cake
2. VISIT A PUMPKIN PATCH

Many local communities have pumpkin patches where neighbors can peruse the farm for the perfect pumpkin. This fun activity is a classic tradition for many and can resurface fond memories from your childhood.

3. CREATE FALL CRAFTS

The new season also seems to bring an itch to start redecorating and creating new pieces. Not only is this a great social activity to do with friends and other residents, but it is also beneficial to the mind. Being creative can keep the brain active and healthy. Here are some popular, and fun, crafts to do in the fall:

  • Rather than carving pumpkins, try painting pumpkins.
  • Make a display or centerpiece of gourds from the pumpkin patch.
  • Cut paper or fabric into leaf shapes, then hang a garland from a fireplace or doorway.
  • Paint acorns in some bright, fall colors, or even dip them in glitter!
  • Wrap some old mason jars in burlap or lace, and use twine for a bow.
  • Press fallen leaves and frame them for a striking autumn wall hanging.
4. GO FOR A SCENIC DRIVE OR WALK

Especially for those with mobility issues, a scenic drive up the canyon may be more appropriate. It’s soothing, it’s relaxing, and it’s breathtaking. Soak up the beauty that surrounds you as you wind through the canyon roads and enjoy the majestic orange and red trees that dot the landscape.
Those who could use a fresh breath of air can enjoy a nature walk. Just remember that fall weather can change unexpectedly, so be prepared with appropriate attire (hats, gloves, jackets, sunscreen, water bottle, etc).

5. HOST A PARTY
Any time is a good time to host a party, but fall brings some good themes along with it: Halloween, Thanksgiving, and football. Get in the holiday spirit with some mummies and goblins, play some traditional games of Bingo or Charades, dance to some festive music, and have fun baking and decorating.
Fall is a special season and a great time to get rejuvenated. These senior-friendly activities are a fantastic way to fall in love with this season and help keep you active. Contact us at Aegis to see how else we can help your loved one.
